For the next few months, our Employee Spotlight will shine on our 2018 Core Value Award winners. This month, Brian Borgman takes center stage.
Brian was awarded the Mike Fischer Award at this year’s annual banquet. This award was created to recognize a team member for ideas and innovation that move the company forward. In 2017 Brian left the sales side of the company and moved into the role of COO.
His attention to detail and processes has changed and improved the operations side of the house. His commitment to do what’s best for the company and for our customers is a model for all to follow. Here’s a little more about Brian in his own words.
Tell us a little bit about the type of work you do at Unified Technologies and your job responsibilities.
I’m the COO/Integrator of Unified. I’m responsible for the overall Operations of the company (Installation and Service, Project Management, Voice and Infrastructure technical teams, etc.)
Additionally, as the Integrator, I’m responsible for connecting all of the departments of the company together to ensure we’re working well together. There’s never a dull moment!!
When you aren’t at work, what keeps you busy?
My family. We have 5 boys aging from 18 down to 6 years old. Three of our boys are soccer players so we do a lot of running them to trainings during the week and matches during the weekend. I love it even though we run a pretty hectic schedule.
Have you always been in this industry? If not, what brought you where you are today?
I’ve been in this industry for about 20 years. My wife was Scott Diamond’s daughter’s 2nd-grade teacher. I met Scott at a school function. Shortly thereafter, I got connected up with Scott when CEDCO/Expanets was growing and adding to their Sales Team. The rest is history.
What’s one thing you love about what you do for a living?
I love finding solutions to problems and then developing the strategy of implementing those solutions.
What you do for fun or to unwind?
Hang with my family… usually watching or talking about soccer.
If you could do one thing for a living that had nothing to do with your current job, what would it be?
Coach College or Pro-soccer
Is there something fun or interesting that you’d like people to know about you?
Our 3 youngest boys are from Ethiopia, and my wife and I have been there 4 times. Also, I can impersonate Kermit the Frog.
(It’s true folks, I’ve seen it first hand. If you meet Brian, be sure to ask him to sing “The Rainbow Connection.” Memorable!)
Favorite food or snack
Grilled cheeseburgers, fried zucchini, corn on the cob, garden fresh tomatoes, and homemade ice cream at my Mom & Dad’s in central Indiana on a Summer night!
Family info – kids, siblings, where are you from, born?
Born in Greenfield, IN, 1 younger brother. Met my wife, Cassie, at Milligan College in Johnson City, TN. Married in 1995 and now have 5 boys ranging from 18 to 6 years old. Our oldest started his Senior year in High School this year while our youngest one started Kindergarten. I haven’t decided yet if our boys will put us in the grave early or keep me young longer.
I believe they will do a little of both. You’ll feel young in spirit, but physically old and tired. A worthy trade-off! Such is parenting!
