How about a ‘staycation’ this summer?
If you’re planning to take some vacation days this summer, but have no travel plans or are just looking for some fun things to do with the kiddos while they are out of school, we’ve got some great customers that could provide hours of fun and entertainment right here in our beautiful Bluegrass state!
Louisville Staycation Spots
If you’re into canoeing, kayaking, hiking or biking, check out the Parklands. 21st Century Parks has created an oasis just inside the Louisville city limits. There’s a splash park for the kids with great trails and streams to explore.
If you’re traveling to Louisville, you may consider staying at The Crown Plaza. Right outside the gates to the site of the Kentucky State Fair and Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park, the hotel is minutes from downtown, the airport and more. For a change from the standard hotel, Loft Revery offers 12 options for downtown Louisville lofts to rent through Airbnb. These lofts are great for bachelor parties or groups wanting to travel the city (or state’s) bourbon trails.
If you just need a night out, Louisville offers everything from great minor league baseball at Slugger Field, home of the Louisville Bats, to dinner theaters and the ballet. The Louisville Ballet’s season doesn’t start until November but season tickets are on sale now and single tickets can be purchased starting in August. Check out the event schedule for the Louisville Bats to catch a fireworks display or see when kids get in free. And if you’re a baseball fan, you really need to take a visit to Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory. You’ll get a history lesson on America’s pastime and watch bats being made right before your eyes.
A short trip over to Paris, Kentucky will let you take in a free tour of Claiborne Farm. You can experience first-hand the workings of a thoroughbred horse farm.
While you’re thinking about a drive out of the city, nothing takes you further from the hustle and bustle of city life like a visit to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. About 80 minutes from Louisville and even closer to Lexington, this quaint community is steeped in the history of the Shakers. The grounds are beautiful and the buildings are architectural marvels of function and design.
While you’re traveling around the state take a drive to Berea, the Folks Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky. Home to Berea College, this city is full of interesting things to do and see. While you’re there, you just may want to dine and even stay the night at Boone Tavern. Over 100 years old, the tavern boasts fine dining and southern hospitality. Many of the pieces in the guest rooms were crafted by the students from Berea College.
Just across the river, you can take in a little dinner and theater at Derby Dinner Playhouse. There are dinner shows throughout the summer as well as lunch and breakfast shows for the kids.
Food Spots to Check Out
You can start your day with breakfast at ZEGGZ, grab lunch at Loui Loui’s in Louisville for authentic Detroit style pizza, and dine at Red State BBQ of any of BHG’s restaurants, including Malone’s and Drake’s if you’re in Lexington or Z’s Oyster Bar in Louisville.
While you’re driving around the state, be sure to look for Hunt Brothers Pizza. They even have an app for finding the closest location as you travel.
Whatever you decide to do this summer, our partners provide lots of exciting options for fun things to do and great things to eat!
