Do you SIP?

Our Sales Staff participates in monthly lunch and learns, with quarterly Lunch & Learns dedicated to understanding carrier services.  It’s our attempt at keeping up with the ever changing landscape of telecommunications.  This afternoon’s topic is SIP trunking.  SIP Trunking is becoming more and more prevalent in our area, in fact, according to Michael White of Virtual Telecomm, most carriers in our area are really pushing SIP trunking.  What is it?  Here’s a pretty good definition

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is the use of voice over IP (VoIP) to facilitate the connection of a private branch exchange (PBX) to the Internet. In effect, the Internet replaces the conventional telephone trunk, allowing an enterprise to communicate with fixed and mobile telephone subscribers worldwide…

What can it do for me?  Well, that depends…

Just like moving from standard analog telephone lines to digital with PRI and T1 trunks, SIP uses the latest technology.  Today that is VoIP technology.  Some advantages to SIP trunking can be that a larger number of “lines” can be supported over the same connection, out of market phone numbers are supported and remote call forwarding is readily available.  SIP trunking might also introduce a whole new level of business continuity and disaster recovery for an organization…

If your company is in Louisville and you want to have the appearance of an office in Phoenix, for example, SIP trunking could support and deliver a Phoenix phone number over the SIP trunking coming into your Louisville office.  Sound complicated?  It is.  But that’s why we take the time to understand it.  Let us help you.  If SIP is a better solution for your business we can tell from a simple analysis.  And we don’t charge for that.  Ask your sales rep or give us a call.  We will be glad to explain the benefits to you.
